Scenic Painting

OBJECTIVE

Students will be introduced to the concepts of color and recognize the basics of scenic painting, including:

  • What is color?
  • What is paint?
  • The tools of the trade.
  • How do we paint?

VOCABULARY

Color Mixing, Hue, Intensity. Value Tints, Shades, Primary Color, Secondary Color, Warm, Cool, Complementary, Analogous, Rainbow.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

9th - 12th Grade Technical Theatre Students

TIME

45 — 60 minutes

MATERIALS

OUTLINE

  1.  HOOK
    Provide a bundle of paint chips to each student or a group of students to use in the activity in a variety of primary color hues, tints, and shades.
    Call out the following terms while students use the paint chips to demonstrate knowledge in a formative activity. What is:

    1. Hue, Tint, shade
    2. Primary Color, Secondary Color, Warm, Cool, Complementary, Analogous, Rainbow
  2. TRANSITION
    Play Video Color Theory Practice With Rosco Scenic Sets (10:21 minutes)

  3. INSTRUCTION
    Begin Scenic Painting Presentation

    Using the presentation and the paint chips, teach the following concept:

    1. How Does Color Work?
    2. Definitions of color
    3. Color mixing
    4. What is paint?
    5. Brushes and Tools
    6. Cleaning
  4. ACTIVITY
    Using the ABCs of Art - Booklet, instruct students to use the media to complete the ABCs of Art Color Theory Handout.

ASSESSMENT

Students turn in ABC’s of Art activity to be graded with a rubric.
