Making a Hand Puppet from Stuff You Have at Home

INTRODUCTION

No need to limit your creativity if you’re stuck in your home; here’s how to make a simple but effective HAND PUPPET from stuff you might have in your house. This activity will take about 6-8 hours, but you will need to let the head dry overnight between some of the stages.

Students will be able to design, construct, and plan, a Hand Puppet based on research.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

6th - 12th Grade Theatre Students

TIME

The hand puppet will take about 6-8 hours, but you will need to let the mask dry overnight between some of the stages.

MATERIALS

  • You will need:
  • Cardboard
  • Newspaper
  • Masking tape
  • Desk stapler
  • Hot glue gun (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Matte knife (Stanley knife or Exacto knife)
  • Pencil
  • Corn flour (corn starch) or wallpaper paste
  • Brown wrapping paper or craft paper
  • Spoon
  • Sandpaper (optional)
  • PVA glue (white glue) (optional)
  • Paint and paintbrushes (optional)
  • Step-by-step Instructions

OUTLINE

  1. Gather the materials and use the instructions to create a hand puppet.
