Utah Shakespeare Festival Delivers Food to Care and Share

CEDAR CITY, Utah—The Utah Shakespeare Festival has taken action to help families in need this holiday season. On Nov. 2 the Festival delivered 2,250 pounds of food to the Iron County Care and Share. Volunteers from the Festival and the Care and Share unloaded food items from two Festival trucks into the Care and Share facility.

“We always have a great time delivering the food donations that we have gathered throughout the fall season to the Care and Share,” said Amanda Caraway, Festival public relations director. “It is one of those days when I feel really proud to work at the Festival.”

Care and Share Executive Director Ray A. Sim was very excited when he saw Festival volunteers drive up with two trucks fully loaded with food.

“It was really gratifying to see that much food coming to the Care and Share,” said Sim. “The timing on this food drive is really great because it helps us prepare for the holiday season and meet the winter needs. ”

The food was gathered from southern Utah residents throughout the 2010 fall season as part of the Festival's seventh annual food drive. During the fall season the Festival offered discounts to theatergoers who donated five-items of nonperishable food per ticket. Local residents were able to see any Tuesday through Thursday fall production for half price with the food donation.

“We had nearly 500 patrons participate in the food drive this year,” said Kami Terry, Festival marketing director. “We were happy that local residents were able to assist the Care and Share and enjoy an evening of great theatre while doing so.”

The Iron County Care and Share still needs help feeding families this holiday season. They also welcome volunteers to assist them. You can visit the Iron County Care and Share at 222 West 900 North in Cedar City, or you can call them at (435) 586-4962.

“Donations to the Care and Share are up this year, but so are the number of requests for assistance,” said Sim. “We have had a total of 600,000 pounds of food donated this year, and we have given out about 500,000 pounds so far. We usually help about 500 families per month and 1,500 individuals.”
